The Cube Test: It Says A Lot About Our Personality… Or Not!

Last updated by Katie M.

“Imagine you’re walking in the desert, and you see a cube…”. This is how a friend tested me on my personality on the last New Year’s Eve. However, it’s not just any personality test, it’s the cube test! It has existed for many years, but I hadn’t heard about it until now. Sometimes it’s a test from Japan, sometimes it’s from a Facebook page, I don’t really know its origin. But what I liked was the time I spent doing it, so here’s the cube test!

Take the cube test: Let’s get creative!

Personally, I love personality tests like the MBTI. That’s why I wanted to write this article. But with the cube test, you don’t answer a questionnaire, it’s a mental visualization exercise. To do it, it’s best if you don’t suffer from aphantasia. You need to be able to use your imagination to make precise images in your mind.

👉 To carry out this test, isolate yourself in a calm place and concentrate. 3, 2, 1… here we go 🤓!

◻️ The cube

Imagine you’re walking in the desert and all of a sudden you see a cube appear. What does this cube look like? Imagine every detail:

  • How big is it? What material? What texture?
  • Is it transparent or opaque? What color is it?
  • Is it placed on top of the sand? Buried in the sand? Is it floating above the ground? If so, how far above the ground?
  • Is it stationary? Or not?
  • Is it far, just in front of you or next to you?

📏 The ladder

A ladder then appears next to the cube. You need to imagine it with as much detail as the cube. What material is it? Where is it in relation to the cube? Is it damaged?

🐎 The horse

Once you’ve visualized the ladder well, there’s something else in this desert: a horse. Once more, you need to create it perfectly:

  • How big is it? What color is it?
  • Is it robust? Fragile?
  • How is its character? Friendly? Gentle? Fiery? Intimidating?
  • Is it free, attached?
  • And once more, where is it in relation to the cube?

💐 The flowers

Once you’ve seen these three elements, you notice flowers. Where are they in the desert? How many are there? Imagine once again the color, the position in relation to the cube, if they’re in bloom or not, etc. You mustn’t forget the slightest detail.

🌪️ The storm

Finally, imagine that a storm breaks out in the desert. Pay attention again to everything that might be important: where is it? Far away or overhead? Is it getting closer? What color is the sky? Is it raining? How intense is it, and what’s its impact? Is it short or long?

Result and meaning of the cube test

Now that the scene is perfectly clear in your mind, we’ll move on to the result of the cube test.

👉 The cube

The cube represents our ego. The transparency corresponds to our openness to others. If the cube is close to the ground, we tend to be more down to earth, but if it’s flying, we’re more imaginative.

For example: my cube is small, transparent with a “cloud” effect, and it’s floating right in front of my eyes. This means that I don’t have a big ego, and I’m open to others. However, I’m imaginative and quite a daydreamer!

👉 The ladder

This represents those around us, our friends and family. The material represents the perception we have of our loved ones (wood = tender, metal = cold and distant). If the ladder is close to the cube, it shows that we’re firmly attached to others, but if it’s far and broken, it represents a break-up.

👉 The horse

This represents our love figure! If it’s free and fiery, we tend to prefer spontaneous and uncomplicated relationships. On the other hand, if it’s wearing a saddle and/or a harness, we want a calm relationship with control over our emotions.

👉 The flowers

The flowers correspond to the children, at least the family we want to have. The more flowers there are, the more we want to have children. If they’re close to the cube, parenthood calls us strongly. But if they’re far away and wilting, we may be better off without children.

👉 The storm

The storm is the most impactful mental projection in my opinion, as it symbolizes our mental healthThe closer and the more threatening the storm is, even on the cube, the more it indicates a lack of well-being and even symptoms of depression. On the other hand, if it’s faraway and somewhat calm, it shows a rather relaxed person.

A personality test to be taken with a pinch of salt

I don’t know about you, but when I did this test with my friends on New Year’s Eve, it made me smile. Of course, you need to tell yourself that it’s a test that remains entertaining rather than a real psychological test. It’s not like the Clance test, which has really been theorized and is used by psychologists to define our character in order to understand us.

However, I still had a good time and I think the funniest thing was comparing with the others what we had imagined. We realized just how different it could be! It shows how we use our imagination and how our subconscious speaks. So a piece of advice, have fun doing it with your close ones, you’ll be surprised, and you’ll have a good time for sure 😄!

Editor’s note: A test not to be taken seriously, but a good time guaranteed!

The cube test is fun and allows you to have a good time with your friends, to get to know them better and to understand your differences. As you can see, it’s a bit of entertainment, but don’t hesitate to tell us in the comments what your test showed. And if you feel a certain uneasiness, if you feel something is wrong and preventing you from flourishing, don’t wait to make an appointment with a coach.

🤗 Understanding yourself, accepting yourself, being happy... It’s here and now!
